I made a quick trip to check out a couple of spots on the Athabaska river, and I got about 30 colors to the shovel at the FT. Assinaboine bridge, upstream side, and very little on lots of places on the downstream side. I then went to the Vega Ferry and tried up stream from the landing, but only a couple of specks per pan. The panning is hard on this part of the river, due to the mud on the gravel, it takes way more time to wash a pan on this river, as compared to the N. Sask., or the Red Deer. Maybe up stream by Whitecourt would be better. I'll try the NSR tomorrow, by the Berrymore crossing. JC

I found the Athabaska a tough place to pan or run the high banker, due to all the mud (sand) in the river from the sands provincial park, and all the sand hills the river runs through. The sand blows and gets washed into the river and turns into mud. It takes twice as long to clean a pan as say the nice clean gravel in the NSR or Red Deer. Whitecourt and above will be my next trip. I did get a couple of 30 plus colors in panning under the bridge at Ft. Asinaboine. Berrymore crossing, next stop. JC

Nice! Good reporting. Maybe when the river drops after the spring runoff it will be better.

Just found this site. I am newly single and looking for a hobby to fill my time. Was thinking of trying panning for fun, and see what happens.
Any suggestions of where on the NSR I might try near Edmonton??

By Edmonton. The best place for beginners in my opinion is prospectors point out by Devon. Always find at least a couple specks of gold in any pan. Plus there a few others that go and you can learn a lot from them. Don't be shy to ask questions... Just don't walk up and start panning beside them... Lol if you ask for demos or ask them to show you somethings they will usually be more then willing
